A Neighborhood Review: Southside
The Southside area of Birmingham is home to a number of local attractions and events. With the presence of UAB, Southside is composed of mainly young professionals, students and budding families. It’s a great destination for individuals seeking a more entertaining lifestyle in the form of dining, shopping, and music. The surrounding neighborhoods offer great city views, and quick access to all downtown Birmingham has to offer.
As Birmingham real estate agents, we frequent these areas and can tell you a lot about them! Let’s take a look at the neighborhoods!
Five Points South
Originally named for its five point intersection located at Magnolia Avenue, 20th Street, and 11th Avenue South, Five Points South quite quickly feels like the heart of the city.
Five Points South was Birmingham’s first streetcar suburb. It was built to serve as a more hip and healthy place to live in downtown Birmingham, where iron furnaces and mills were operating nearby.
The area hosts some of the city’s most distinct architecture, seen in churches, apartments, houses and commercial buildings, as well as many of the most revered restaurants.
Over the last few years great efforts have been made to bring new life back into Five Points, and they are paying off. Five Points South is now seen as one of the most popular shopping and recreational areas of Birmingham, and living there means being right in the heart of it all!
Glen Iris
In Glen Iris you will find a wide variety of individuals. On a single street lives retirees, young families, and single bachelors alike, all from different backgrounds. Most people choose Glen Iris because it offers a small town, suburban feel, while being walking distance from the hustle and bustle of city life.
This neighborhood is close to all the great restaurants and shopping that Five Points hosts, but is also near parks and wonderful schools for children. The George Ward Park is the closest and nicest park. It has everything from paved trails, to a fenced dog park, and even tennis courts. Glen Iris is a great place for any person to settle in.
Lakeview
Lakeview is rapidly becoming the most exciting place for urban living in Birmingham. The district has historic and modern apartments that are great for young people eagerly seeking entertainment. That is because, while Lakeview is close to downtown, and all its excitement, it also has a number of things to do itself.
For people who enjoy the arts, Lakeview has the Alabama Ballet, the Terrific New Theatre, and Sloss Furnace. Sloss Furnace has recently become a major venue for Birmingham concerts.
Additionally, Lakeview residents can purchase all natural, farm fresh ingredients every week from April through December, right outside their doorsteps! That is because Alabama’s largest farmers market is hosted right in the Lakeview district at the Pepper Place Market.
