5 tips to prepare your home for winter

Don’t leave your home out in the cold. As the winter months are approaching, you’ll want to make sure that your home is well-prepared to handle the colder temperatures. These do-it-yourself projects won’t take up much time and will save you money in the long run and will guarantee to prepare your home for winter.

  1. Keep the draft away by caulking around the outside of your windows and doors to prevent any effects of the elements. This will block colder temperatures from entering your home, thus lowering your monthly power bill.
  2. Turn off your outdoor faucets. The leftover water in these pipes easily can freeze, which may cause them to burst as the ice expands. As an extra measure, you may also want to disconnect your garden hose from the outside faucet to ensure that your hose remains undamaged through the winter.
  3. Since the cold weather can be tough on your roof, check for any damaged shingles that may leave you with a leak in the winter. Also, clean and check your gutters for security, as the weight of ice or moisture can put added pressure on loose gutters.
  4. Check for and dispose of any leaves or branches that may have fallen on your roof. These can also be weighed down by ice build-ups and added moisture. This will also help keep your home looking nice for family and friends visiting during the holidays.
  5. Finally, make sure furniture isn’t covering any of your heating vents. You’ll want all the warmth you can get during these months, so be sure to relocate any blockage. This will also ensure that your home is properly heated without increasing temperatures on the thermostat.
