HOAs: The Pros and the Cons

Homeowner’s Associations (HOAs) tend to have mixed reviews. This is because every resident is unique in their needs, and every HOA has different rules and regulations that must be abided by.

When it comes to searching for your next home, stay away from other people’s opinions on HOAs. This could really limit your search and potentially keep you from finding the place of your dreams. Instead, learn the pros and cons, and weigh them against your individual lifestyle! A real estate agent in Birmingham can help!

(7 Mistakes To Avoid That Every First Time Homeowner Should Know!)

Homeowner’s Association Cons

Let’s start with the bad stuff so we can end on a positive note. Here are the cons to living in an HOA community:

Fees – The biggest con to living with an HOA are the fees. Every HOA community offers different amenities and services, and charges their residents based on these. Amenities may include a pool, tennis courts, maintenance, pest control, valet trash, and much more. While these fees may boost your monthly expenses, they do add and help maintain value to a home.

Rules – Many people have a very specific idea of how they want the interior and exterior of their new home to look. The problem is, once you move into an HOA community, if you didn’t read the rules and regulations thoroughly, you may find out that your design changes are illegal.  Even simple holiday decor like Christmas lights might be prohibited, and disobeying the rules can cost you a hefty chunk of money.

Homeowner’s Association Pros

For many, the above cons are deal breakers, but sometimes people looking for homes don’t consider the many advantages of an HOA.

Aesthetics – Generally speaking, HOA communities are easy on the eyes. Sure, you may not be able to decorate your house with Christmas lights, but that also means your neighbor can’t paint his home a hideous orange color! Additionally, HOA communities are well maintained, from the exterior paint to the playgrounds.

Amenities – Who doesn’t love to swim, especially in the hot Alabama sun? HOAs often have incredible amenities like pools, basketball courts, walking trails, pet parks, and much more – and the best part is, they are all maintained by the association (meaning you can have your pool, without the tough maintenance)!

Less Negative Neighborhood Experiences – While rules can be a real bummer to some, it is also a major key to reducing bad neighborhood experiences like disputes over the placement of your new shed, frequent and loud parties, or a neighbor’s aggressive dog.
