July Local Spotlight | Montgomery
This month in ARC Realty’s “Locals Supporting Locals” program (LoLo), we’re featuring the heart of Cloverdale, the Capri Theatre. Opened in 1941 as the Clover Theatre, it is now the longest operating movie theatre in Alabama. In 1962, the Clover was remolded and became the Capri Theatre. The theatre has had many owners throughout the years and finally in 1982, a group of neighbors formed the Capri Community Film Society to save the theatre.
The conversion to digital cinema became a major threat to this theatre, and many other small theatres’ in America. However, the Capri conducted what was the biggest kickstarter campaign in Montgomery. From this the campaign, the theatre raised enough money to install a digital projector and the Capri was saved once again! Even with the new technology, that did not stop the theatre from showing 35mm films. The theatre keeps the classics alive by occasionally showing 35mm films when available!
After 30 years since the last remodeling, the Film society was ready to refurbish the theatre in 2016. Again, the people of Montgomery came together to support the Capri with over $800,000 in pledges and donations to complete renovations in time for its 75th Anniversary.
The Capri Theatre needs your support to survive and prosper! Come to the movies, become a member and support the Capri Community Film Society!
