Ways to enjoy your time at home
While many of us are still under “shelter in place” orders, our homes have started to feel like another family member. And like any family, a little too much time together makes you see things you might have overlooked before. Now is a great time to freshen up your home and make the space feel like new. Here are a few simple things you can do that make your home more enjoyable!
Start an herb garden
Since most of us are cooking now more than ever, it’s a great time to start an herb garden. There is an old wives’ tale that you should start your garden after Easter, making now a perfect time to plant some seeds or starters. We recommend starting with rosemary, basil, oregano and mint. Either use a raised planter bed or a simple pot for each. If you’re using seeds, make a label with a leftover popsicle stick and marker so that you’ll be able to identify each. If you’re using living plants, dig planting holes that are appropriately spaced and gently plant each, covering lightly with soil. Water regularly, especially as the temperature outside rises.
Make a fire pit / roast some marshmallows in the backyard
We’ve had a series of weekends with strong storms. More than likely, you’ve got a few branches down in your yard. While you’re doing yardwork, gather sticks and branches for a fire. With lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s, this beautiful Spring weather seems like a perfect reason to drag a few lawn chairs around a basic firepit (bonus points if you roast a few marshmallows, too). You can buy a chiminea or build a safe firepit by stacking bricks or concrete blocks. Be sure to never leave fires unattended and always start small.
Improve your curb appeal
We could all use some time outdoors, especially during a sunny spring day. Spend some time shaking out your doormat, pulling some weeds from around the yard and sweeping your patio. Another easy way to improve your curb appeal is to repaint your front door! It will give your home a new, clean look.
Declutter
Now is a great time to go through those boxes in the basement that you never unpacked when you moved in. Take a few books off the shelf that no longer “spark joy” and donate them to one of the many local organizations in our area. Some of the most sought after supplies right now are canned foods and hygienic necessities (shampoo, soap, toothpaste). If you have some to spare, now is a great time to help someone in need and free up some counter space. It has been proven that neat, decluttered spaces around the house can reduce anxiety and create peace of mind.
