What’s Happening in the Magic City?
Downtown Birmingham has seen an increase in development and a spark of revitalization in recent years. With the influx of new businesses and millennial residents, Birmingham is poised to become a hub for incoming real estate and popular businesses hoping to make an initial footprint in a thriving city.
Recently named as one of the New York Times’ 52 places to go in 2017, Birmingham was listed due to the revitalization of the Avondale neighborhood, “where artists, restaurateurs and young entrepreneurs are taking over brick warehouses and Queen Anne cottages.”
Here are a few things happening in and around the Magic City.
Residential development
The increase of residential developments in the downtown area have helped attract an influx of young professionals and those looking for a big city feel in a small town environment. Places such as The Venue, which is located directly across from Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons, have given the city’s newcomers a unique place to live. Residents here can watch the games directly from their own balconies. The city has also revamped many of its historic apartment complexes and neighborhoods to appeal to those hoping to settle downtown.
Restaurants
Birmingham’s restaurant scene is one of the most significant reasons the city has gained local and national attention. The Pizitz Food Hall is set to bring a variety of food options from around the world. Avondale has welcomed new tenants such as Fancy’s on Fifth, The Marble Ring and Melt.
Commercial development
A number of commercial development projects have broken ground in Birmingham over the past years. The renovation of the Thomas Jefferson Tower will bring residential apartments, as well as restaurants and retail space to the area. The Historic Federal Reserve Building has also been newly renovated and will welcome new tenants beginning in early 2017.
Activities
From the soon-to-be Topgolf to the Iron City event venue, Birmingham has a lot to offer when it comes to entertainment. Railroad Park provides fun for the entire family, offering special activities and events throughout the year. Festivals such as Slicefest have brought the generations together with music ranging from all eras and genres.
Breweries
An abundance of new breweries have recently made their way to Birmingham, specifically the Avondale area. The breweries have given Birmingham a style of its own and have helped attract more young people to the area. The popular brewery hangouts have given the city a tight-knit, community feel with a style all its own.
It’s obvious why Birmingham has earned its nickname, the “Pittsburg of the South.” However, it’s not only the incoming development that is making the city thrive. The people have a passion for this city that is rarely found elsewhere. Birmingham residents are the driving force behind its revitalization and the breath of new life that has been given to the city in recent years.
